George Windle Read (b. Nov. 19, 1860, Indianola, Ia.-d. Nov. 6, 1934) graduated from the U.S. military academy at West Point in 1883 where he received his commission as 2nd lieutenant in the 16th Infantry. He advanced to the rank of major general on Mar. 8, 1921 after having commanded the 2nd Army Corps from June 13, 1918, until demobilization on February 1, 1919. John Henry Sherburne (b. Jan. 29, 1877, Boston, Mass.-d. July 25, 1959), Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, was a Harvard graduate who also earned his law degree in 1901. He served with the Massachusetts Field Artillery on the Mexican border and with the American Expeditionary Force from 1917 to 1919.
